How much is too much honesty?

I was thinking of the concept of honesty and I became torn about the issue of how much honesty is too much honesty in a relationship (all kinds)....

Everyone is familiar with the phrase, "honesty is the best policy," but is it though?
I think honesty is imperative to build a strong relationship but I also believe some things shouldn't be said. I suppose it's all situational.

For instance no one likes brutal honesty because insensitivity in language never prevails. Most people don't have the intent of hurting someones feelings but they do anyways because they think that telling you the absolute truth about everything will be more beneficial. Even little honest remarks can be damaging like, "Yea I love that skirt your wearing but your butt looks big in it." This may not seem that bad to some but others may not feel the same way.

In relationships, couples like to discuss each other's pasts but saying something about how you still have feelings for your ex may not be constructive for the relationship. This may leave the other feeling insecure and self-conscious about the relationship.

Again all this is situational bu ti think the essential thing to keep in my mind is to think before you say and do. You cant go wrong with that!

Love. Laugh. Live.
